If you qualify for membership in the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA), you can save $75 on a new membership through January 15, 2022, by using the code 2021FALLDRIVE, as first reported by Jennifer Goforth Gregory in the Freelance Content Marketer group. ASJA will waive the application and initiation fees for eligible applicants using the code – a savings of $75.

ASJA boasts a long history of advocating for independent writers, providing educational opportunities, and sponsoring high-value networking events, such as their annual conference and periodic virtual “pitchfests” called “Client Connections.” Many ASJA members will attest to the value of the networking opportunities the group provides between writers and editors.

The organization welcomes freelance non-fiction writers across four membership tiers:

    • Associate
    • Professional
    • Retired
    • Student

You must have minimum numbers of published work samples to apply for the various membership tiers, and the samples must come from certain types of writing, such as journalism and custom content. Note that fiction, poetry, self-published blogs, pay-per-click writing, work for small special-interest publications, and most types of self-published books do not qualify as work samples for prospective membership in ASJA.

ASJA offers a host of membership benefits for professional members, including discounts on services, access to health care insurance, and more, making an ASJA membership valuable beyond the events, education, and networking it provides. ASJA also administers the Writer’s Emergency Access Fund (WEAF) which provides cash assistant to writers in distress, regardless of whether or not they are members of ASJA.

An ASJA membership can be a great value for many nurse writers. If you’re interested in exploring ASJA membership, take advantage of the waived initiation and application fee through January 15, 2022.
